RECKONING BERLIN
(2013)
I spent six weeks in Berlin to make this series of portraits of friends and colleagues I had met working with Transart Institute over the past two years in Berlin. The process was done entirely from life sittings which often took place at the homes or studios of the people I worked with. Working only from life causes a vibrant and ephemeral quality to develop as the people change over time, sinking down into thoughtful silence, confiding stories or listening to music as the case may be. Most of these were executed in under 20 hours and in some cases quite a bit less, our allotted time adding its own ingredient to the facets of the painting. Special thanks to Alexa, Egbal, Michael, Sascha, Gritta, Birgit, Janine and especially to my friend Aurora, who provided the studio space at Weißensee.
